The day started out dark, punctuated with heavy downpours and not much promised in the way of sunshine. My “big” grandson Chris is visiting from Ontario for three weeks and I wondered what we should do to fill a grey afternoon.
“I wonder if he would be interested in going bowling?” I asked Roland.
“Phone him and see,” was his response.
So I did…
“Hay Chris, What are you up to?”
“Not much, just feeding the ‘Zac-Attack’.”
“Feel like going bowling with Grandma and Grandpa?”
“Sure.. that sounds like fun.” was his quick response.
He’s such a good kid! I have my suspicions that not many seventeen year olds would be too thrilled at the idea of spending a free afternoon bowling with their grandparents but Chris seemed quite ok with the plan. Gotta love him for that. :-)
Did you know that the bowling lanes now have gutter guards to prevent gutter balls? Well they do, and this was news to us as well. Right from the start we opted to level the guards and allow the balls to land where they may. Confident, and perhaps misguided, we started our game. Competition was stiff… and the high fives almost managed to out number the gutter balls… well maybe not quite. :-)
Three games later we had each managed to win one game a piece and each of us had racked up a score greater than 100. We learned that none of us have much of a future at this bowling thing… but we certainly do know how to have fun. :-)
Arriving back at Paul and BJ’s house we were greeted by BJ, Zach and a lit barbeque. BJ had invited us to stay for supper and we all jumped in to help where we could. I was delegated to feed Zach. Chris was put in charge of skewering the shrimp. Roland opened the wine and BJ busied herself orchestrating the entire endeavor. She is quite the girl, our BJ. :-)
The supper was delicious… scalloped potatoes, barbequed pork loin, barbequed shrimps, mushrooms, cucumbers and strawberries with Cool Whip for desert.
While we ate the skies partially cleared and the sun peeked out. Full to the brim and feeling the need to move, we decided to throw Zach into his stroller and head out for a walk. Surprisingly after such a wet day, the air was warm with only the hint of a breeze offering relief from the high humidity.
Our walk wasn’t long but it was most enjoyable… and perfectly timed. After heading on back, and about three houses down from home, the sky once more let loose and the rain drops fell. We managed to reach the covered patio just as the rain really started to fall. Slightly wet but filled to the brim with all the wonder that is family, Roland and I said our goodbyes and hurried to the car.
A fitting end to a perfectly marvelous rainy day.

We haven’t had rain in so long, just a description sounds wonderful to me. Yesterday there was a cloud in the sky. We “prayed” to it.
Family makes just about anything memorable. Good that you have a way to write down the memories so you and any other family will be able to look back and remember, too.
You wouldn’t believe how long it has been since I went bowling. I don’t think Nyssa and I ever did… skating yes, both ice and roller but not bowling. If she were home more than seven days we might try it. I remember good times in high school with my friends… we could get three games for two dollars back then.
As for the rain… send it down here… please. My sprinkler system and well are mucked up from the construction and I am trying to keep the front yard alive… I have already given up on the back. For a while we had more than we needed and now, not enough. So a summer goes.
Marvelous day!
The last time I went in an alley it had black lights and disco balls and loud music. I like what’s up your alley better.
Nice family photos too. :)
love that hair on top of his head….the baby i mean
I know.. me too! It grows straight up. :-)
