Rock On Star Child

My grand kids live a great distance from me. Thank goodness we live in the age that we do. Computers allow us to be close even when many miles lie between us.

About one month ago, I was talking long distance with my grandson, Chris. He is quite the young man (I know.. typical grandma here :-) ). He is very active playing hockey and also has turned into quite the musician. He and a couple of his buds have formed a small band.. but they have a problem in that none of them can sing, so their band lacks a singer.

Way back in December their school held a concert. One of Chris’s teachers is so impressed with his guitar skills that he (the teacher) offered to be their lead singer if they would perform the song, “All Along the Watchtower“, at the concert.

Back to our telephone conversation. Chris was telling me about this concert and how he had it on video.

“Chris, do you know how to put videos on to YouTube?” I asked.

“No, Grandma.. how do I do that?”

The next few minutes were spent discussing the not so difficult workings of YouTube. Three hours later, I received an email with a link to this now famous performance.

It shows on YouTube that this video has been viewed over 1000 times. Don’t tell Chris.. but I think 999 of those hits have been by his grandma.

Admittedly, the music is not for everybody and at times the feedback is very squeaky.. but if you can stick it out till the end (the best part).. you will really be able to see just how very talented this young man is.

Chris is playing lead guitar. He is the blond boy in the beige shirt and blue jeans.

His teacher did a fantastic job on the vocals. Bless him for taking the time and interest in these young kids. Teachers are the best!

Every time I watch this video, my heart practically bursts with pride. :-)

Rock on, star child, rock on.

Colleen, that was FANTASTIC! Jimi-approved, I’m sure. I can’t wait to show this to Carl who has such a deep appreciation for such passionate musicians. Chris has got some wicked riffs goin’ on throughout that song. And hats off to that wonderful teacher who looked like he was having as much fun as those boys. Great clip, Colleen, and way to get him to post it on YouTube!

    *applause*

  2. Admittedly, I prefer the softer stuff, but after listening to your grandson, I’m sitting here with a lit Bic lighter in my hand… rock on!

  3. Beverly says:

That is so neat of that teacher to recognize your grandson’s talent and even offer to be the lead singer. Way to go.

  4. A talented young man indeed! And how neat that Grandma was able to teach him how to put his clip on YouTube for the rest of the world! Kudos to both of you.

  5. Linda says:

I’ll have to come back to it as I could only watch the first 30 seconds or so. From what I could see though, that boy’s got what it takes! There is some pretty fancy guitar playing going on there. I have 2 sons who are musicians and I never get tired of watching them play-even when it’s in a bar!

  6. Heather says:

Wow! I’m impressed! Looks pretty talented to me!

I have to say I get a kick out of Grandma teaching grandson to use YouTube! Bet that doesn’t happen very often. The other day I was in The Source, and a Grandma was in there shopping for a gift for her grandson. She asked the salesperson “can you tell me what an iPod is?” Clearly, you’re a pretty hip Grandma!

  7. Anvilcloud says:

It’s not playing for me right now. I’ll try to get back to it.

  8. Dianne says:

I am that boys proud Great Auntie!!

  9. colleen says:

He sounds as good as Prince last night at halftime! I wish I had a grandmother like you that would show me how to post videos at Utube.

  10. Dianne says:

Speaking of Prince at the Super Bowl half time…I loved it…ran to my computer and downloaded 4 of my favorite Prince songs to my i-pod. On the other hand my 56 year old husband hated it!! We had a huge difference of opinion at breakfast this morining. What did all of you think??

  11. Jan says:

I loved Colleen’s grandson’s group, young, fresh, enthusiasm. Prince was…Prince. Seemed like a waste of all that smoke to me. I loved the marching band and the visual effects of the marchers.

  12. Jeff says:

I have listen to a great deal of that type of music when I was, ahem, younger, and so I think I am quite qualified to comment on your grandson’s talent.

    He’s got lots. :)

  13. Monique says:

You certainly have every right to be proud. What talent!!

  14. Pearl says:

Great to get stage level skill so young. And for youtube to literally bring it home. Great world indeed.

  15. Inkling says:

How cool–and now I’m sure his hits are up even higher, and they weren’t all Grandma this time!

  16. srp says:

Congratulations all around! And you are so right, how lucky he is to have a teacher take interest and recognize his talent.

  17. He is a talented young man. I enjoyed that!
