A Wedding Story

Saturday October 14, 2006.. David and Nicole’s wedding day.

On this afternoon, months of dreams and preparations unfolded and lived up to our every expectation. This day, and all that it held, will always be treasured as one of the happiest days of my life. Here are some of the highlights.

The morning of the wedding, rather unplanned (surprisingly in the mist of such intense planning) my two sons , David, the groom, and his brother, Paul, the best man, arrived on my doorstep to prepare and dress. Together we figured out the parts and workings of putting together a tux, a new experience for us all. I am still in awe of the transformation in my boys. They looked amazing!! Together, we drove to the wedding as a family.

October in Manitoba.. a month that can reflect both ends of the spectrum in regards to the weather. A week before the wedding we were enjoying lovely fall days, warm and sunny. The week of the wedding.. and even more specifically, the evening before the arrival of our out of town quests, we had our first mini snow storm.

Undaunted, David and Nikki held on to their dream of having an outdoor wedding ceremony. After two more days of extreme winds and hovering temperatures they maintained their ‘wait and see’ attitude.

The morning of the wedding the winds calmed and the sun came out to display clear blue skies. At 3:30 in the afternoon, my son, David, and his bride, Nikki, joined hands, surrounded by their friends and families, underneath our bountiful blue prairie skies, and exchanged their vows. There are no words to articulate the joy.

The reception and dance were all that we had hoped for, and more.

Paul’s words included the memory of his sixth birthday when his brother, David, emptied his piggy bank to buy his younger brother a birthday present of chips, coke and a candy bar.

As he spoke he looked over at David who I could see was visibly moved by the recollection and the fact that Paul still held the memory close. At that moment I was witness to the love and the bond shared between my two boys. I could no longer hold back my tears.

The dance was a blast. The room was filled with friends, laughter, family and fun. A couple of times I was actually able to sit quietly, allowing my eyes and heart to capture the ambiance and the camaraderie of the room. I wish always to be able to remember these moments.

This post reminded me of my own wedding. I remember waiting in the vestibule when the pastor came in to let me know it was almost time. he said, “It’s your last chance if you want to make a run for it”. I looked around the room and noticed the only other way out, (other than walking straight into the church,) was a small window. I said, “My soon to be wife specifically chose this church because this window is to small for me to fit through”. She really had thought of everything.

Then I went and got hitched.
